Discover Jonesville

456 N. Bridge St. · Right side of the Unique Transportations building
Muralist: Joey Dill

Jonesville’s first mural of four, “Discover Jonesville”, is a picturesque
journey through the various array of activities that this family friendly town has to offer its visitors and community. The collaboration between the Jonesville Tourism Development Authority and Unique Transportations, who donated the use of their wall as a canvas, led to the creation of something bright, beautiful and eye-catching that can be enjoyed by all, resident and visitor alike, while amping up the visual appeal of this already quaint small town.

From Jonesville’s beginning as the largest town west of Raleigh, an iron ore mining town, a military outpost through two wars, and the oldest town in Yadkin County; Jonesville’s identity has evolved through time into a gateway for the region’s multitude of activities. Jonesville can be your beginning, middle or end while sampling the 50+ wineries along the Swan Creek and Yadkin Valley American Viticulture Areas, or while exploring the connection to the Over Mountain Victory Trail and the numerous other hiking trails intersecting the area, including their own greenway that follows the Yadkin River as depicted in the mural. The mural’s landscape depicts the rolling hills surrounding Jonesville as well as rows of grape vines flourishing in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains which represents the huge growth of wineries in the area. The mural explores the possibilities available to visitors thru the vibrant images of kayakers enjoying the Yadkin River that is an integral part of the town, a family of campers sitting by their fire making memories, a hiker and bicyclist navigating Jonesville’s greenway as it meanders along the river, and even motorcyclists navigating the region’s amazing highways that draw adventurers to the curves of its winding roads.

The mural is a call to all who wish to discover what is great about Jonesville and the area. Jonesville isn’t just a convenient gateway to the area from its location off Interstate 77; it is the heart of the Yadkin Valley region and has been throughout its history. The American flag floating above it all on this mural is representative of the town’s history, pride, and acknowledgement that none of it would be possible without those that fought and died for the freedom we have today. By taking an old ugly cinderblock wall and creating a vision of what is to be celebrated about Jonesville, the “Discover Jonesville” mural has become a testament and illustration of Jonesville’s new identity and what is waiting to greet all of you!

Nostalgia

224 South Bridge St. · Foothills Meat Center
Muralist: Joey Dill

Pepsi Bottling Ventures has been working with muralist, Joey Dill, to revive the memories of yesteryear thru her work painting murals on highly visual buildings along main corridors throughout NC. Their goal of incorporating memory evoking vintage Pepsi and Mountain Dew images and phrases, while partnering with business owners to include their own nostalgic and personal images, has led to some extraordinary works of art for us all to enjoy! In this case of “Nostalgia”, Pepsi collaborated with Greg Pardue at Foothills Meat Center to pay homage to both of their pasts in Jonesville. The mural imagery in “Nostalgia”, covering 1980sf on the side of Foothills Meat Center, is a combination of a landscape scene portraying the Foothills
and Blue Ridge Mountains with a quaint farm nestled at its base, along with an exciting young man about to be launched into a pond off a rope swing as well as two Pepsi hot air balloons floating in the distance enjoying the view, and a retro Mountain Dew bottle and phrase that makes you reminisce of younger days and the fun activities of our youth.

The tractor and truck in the farm scene play a nostalgic role for the owner of Foothills Meat Center since they are replicas of the truck and red belly tractor his dad used to drive. Greg’s dad, Howard, worked alongside him when he opened the meat center and was his greatest supporter before he passed. Greg credits his dad when it came to being taught the value of hard work. The “In Memory to Howard Pardue and Worth Masten” located in the base of the tree at the center of the mural goes to the heart of what his dad, as well as Worth Masten, contributed to Greg and the community. Worth gave Greg his first job at the age of 12 and taught him about the meat business thus guiding him to where he is today. In 1997 Greg bought Worth’s sugar cured ham business and rebranded it to Foothills Sugar Cured Ham which is sold nationally now and is also represented in the mural. Between Worth and Greg, a meat center has been part of the Jonesville community for almost 50 years and Pepsi, in various capacities, has been a part for over 75 years. This very large and beautiful mural is not only about the nostalgia it brings to the viewer’s mind, but the legacy these two businesses have brought to the Jonesville community and Foothills region.

Pepsi: Honoring OUr Past

237 Winston Rd. · Front of the Pepsi Bottling Ventures building
Muralist: Joey Dill

“Honoring Our Past” is Pepsi Bottling Venture’s 2,310 sf mural on the front of their distribution center in Jonesville, NC. The mural honors the memory of past versions of the brand through the painting of a giant vintage bottle cap stating “A nickel a drink, worth a dime”, a large block font Pepsi brand name across the largest portion
of the road facing wall, and an oversized refreshing looking Pepsi bottle to make the memory complete. The use of these images is a way to evoke fond memories from childhood and make positive emotional connections when you see their murals, as well as a way that Pepsi connects their past to their present. Pepsi’s curation of their vintage looking murals is part of their plan to add value to the community, honor their legacies, and show appreciation to their customers and the communities surrounding them.

While Pepsi Bottling Ventures is a distribution center which currently sells around 2.7 million cases of Pepsi products a year, that is not how they started. When the land the building is on was purchased from Chatham Manufacturing in 1946, the building was built some time after that and was used to actually bottle the popular soda product by the Pepsi Corporation up until the early 1980’s. Pepsi Bottling Ventures took over the facility in 1999 and has operated it as a distribution hub since that time. Pepsi has been an integral part of the Jonesville community for decades and we look forward to continuing this relationship for decades to come!

Heart of the yadkin valley

237 Winston Rd. · Right side of the Pepsi Bottling Ventures building
Muralist: Joey Dill

“Heart of the Yadkin Valley”, a mural on the right side of the Pepsi Bottling Ventures building, is also a phrase of distinction by which the Town of Jonesville is identified by. The phrase “Heart of the Yadkin Valley” speaks to the fact that Jonesville is at the center of the Yadkin River Valley region. The compass at the top directs you to “Discover Jonesville,” whether by floating down the meandering Yadkin River, or picking a trail through the scenic foothills that surround it.

The vintage 1930s Pepsi bottle at the corner of the Jonesville sign pulls in the fun vintage charm Pepsi brought to their building with their murals on the front. A quirky marketing phrase on the bottle, “A Sparkling Bracing Beverage” spoke to its refreshing and invigorating qualities at that time because of the carbonation and kick with each gulp. This was followed by the phrase “Refreshing and Healthful” where people over 100 years ago thought Pepsi to have some health benefits.
